Cold Snap--Evening Update

What a shock to our bodies-woke up to the mid 30's F this morning. Not ready to turn the heat on yet though.

Yesterday I brought in the two large clay pots of the amaryllis bulbs so they wouldn't freeze and also the small pot of annual mums that I picked up a month or so ago-after tomorrow we are warming back up for the rest of the month-loving it  A bit unusual for October, perhaps I can work on pulling up some of those weeds

My spinning is going well, so am very happy. As much as I love spinning fibers I have yet to really master really good yarn with no flaws-but mine does have character haha.

I needed to switch over to spinning just the bison fibers-which is a challenge as the fibers just barely hold together while spinning. I found a bag of a few huge balls of roving to spin. At the time I had found a seller that was getting out of selling this fiber so I was able to buy it-otherwise it is very very expensive I filled up the niddy noddy last night so I wetted the yarn to set the spin. Once dry will go back and finish up spinning more of this blend. I found another white wool I can use once I finish up what I am using now.

I decided to treat myself to a new handmade spindle. The one I am using by Ashford works well but it has a crack that I mended on the top. Those are now rather expensive for as simple they are. So I shopped on Etsy for handmade spindles. I always preferred the whorl on the bottom instead of the top. I liked this one-the whorl (bottom) was crafted from black walnut. For the same price the seller had a spindle with a handmade bowl-to place the tip in while spinning, or two sizes of spindles-I went for the two.  I have a collection of awesome stone or glass  I enjoy using to hold the base.

Things are much more stressful at this point-so I decided I needed a little gift for myself. I am encouraged that my spinning is going well, very relaxing and have always enjoyed it.

  Enjoy your weekend

Found this photo online frost on the pumpkin

update: does anyone have a hamburger goulash type recipe-but using No tomato products and gluten free? thanks

Evening update: sorry I couldn't get a photo of my slow cooker soup-my camera does badly with indoor photos.

I browsed online for recipe ideas-and ended up making a hamburger soup-which I have not made before or even heard of  smiles. I added unsalted beef broth to my slow cooker  sauted some chopped white onions-added to the soup, used a half package of usa hamburger and cooked in cast iron til just cooked through-kept the meat in chunks and added to the soup. I always keep those small packages of small potatoes around so cut up a bunch of those in half and added to the soup. I keep organic canned mushrooms on hand-added those. Added some dried chives, and frozen peas.  With  my acid reflux issue-due to all the stress-I don't add much spices any more but did add a little ground pepper. Let it cook all afternoon-then added handfulls of Bob's Red Mill dried potato flakes to thicken a bit. I just had a bowl-very tasty-would make this again-and I have enough for a couple more meals. I have always cooked and baked for my husband-so this is new cooking for myself.

  2. It was also brisk this morning on my side of the state, but like you I'm putting on layers instead of turning on the furnace.

  3. OOOooo its deliciously cool here too.... down in the 40's the last two nights!!! Yippeee!!! I even wore my sweatshirt for the first time this Fall!! I have a FoxTail Fern i'd like to try to Winter over inside... I need to find a pot for it to bring it in soon... Its done so well for me this year... in morning sun... Not turning on the heat here yet either.. just put on more clothes... After this cool spell we are warming up too but the nights stay cool... I can deal with that.. What a great pumpkin picture!! I do have a 'hamburger ' goulash type recipe but its rather simple as i have cut out the potatoes and the corn for hubby's blood sugar and have for years switched out the hamburger for ground turkey.. AND i do add a can of stewed tomatoes... I hope someone has a good recipe for you... do share!! I'm so glad you treated yourself.... You sure have a talent for spinning... i think that is so often... I always thought i'd like to learn how to make socks... In an apocalypse i could be the 'Sock Lady'...lol... Take care Kathy! Enjoy your cooler weather... wishing you less stress... Hugs! deb

    1. Good morning, thank you Deb, I had a friend that loved making socks-she had steady orders for them. she surprised me with a pair one year-I should stop "saving" them and wear them in the house-but protect the bottoms-as I don't wear shoes in the house. she is my friend that passed from a lung disease a year or so after she drove me to Yellowstone-
I looked online and found a recipe I can "play" with it uses beef broth instead of tomato sauce

  5. Nice photo! Dear Kathy, it has gotten much cooler here in Montreal, and I love it. It usually is a bit of a shock in the beginning, especially after an extremely hot and humid summer with the wildfires, but I am breathing a sigh of relief. The Autumn colours and fresh, crisp air are just what I needed.
Take good care of yourself, my friend.

  7. Glad you got the spindle. We did turn on our furnace Saturday night. I was not feeling good all day and decided I needed to get the chill out of the house. Hope your soup recipe was good. I love soup. Janice

  8. Yes, it's getting cooler here in southern Europe too. My air conditioning does hot air too so I have turned that on the other evening. And I have gotten my autumn clothes out so I can wear a track suit or something warm in the evening. Stove not yet used.
It's great that you are getting back into spinning.I remember you used to like that a lot.
Your soup is making me hungry. (It's supper time here). I've made lemon drizzle cake this evening. In fact I made two small ones. One for my cleaner (I always give her some baked item) and one for me.
    New spindle: Go girl!
You haven't mentioned Larry for a while. No change?
    Happy T-Day,
    Lisca

    1. Hi Lisca, you just reminded me that we have small plug in electric heaters-I totally forgot about those and will get those out and use them now-as the house says 70F but feels chilly. I have always enjoyed the whole process of spinning-just never was super good at it-more bulky which I can still weave with though.
Your cake sounds delicious, I was really happy with my hamburger soup as it was really delicious.
Thank you for asking, Larry is declining fast now-difficult to watch, a nurse comes every day now to our home to check on him. He has suffered so much-hard to watch
      Happy T Day-hugs back

  9. Hi Kathy, my name is Delisa and I am a new follower. You had me at "spinning bison fibers"! I love all things fiber and yarn. I have never yet tried my hand at spinning but it is definitely on my bucket list. I also am very interested in learning how to dye fibers with natural plant based dyes. I love to knit and crochet. I love to make soft toys and designing unique vintage costumes. I just got done with a Regency Era black cat with a red empire waist dress trimmed in gold, for my niece. :). I always like to think what would I have liked to play with when I was little? And let my imagination free float. I also love to write both stories and poems. Thank you for your beautiful post and I look forward to reading more in the future. Have a lovely day tomorrow!

    1. Good evening so glad you found me. I love the fiber arts too, I weave but never learned how to knit or crochet. I had tried knitting when I was very young but didn't do so well-in my 20's I learned how to weave-so working on getting back to that again. I am a senior in my 70's now.
I love that you are writer too

  10. This didn't show up on my feed. I feel like my feed is being testy lately and I keep missing posts of many people. Blogger is at it again I guess. And if you want perfect yarn you can go buy machine made yarn. I love yarn that has little imperfections. It gives it character. I'm knitting a scarf right now and the yarn I bought stinks. It literally has many broken pieces in it. And it wasn't cheap yarn to start with. It is really discouraging. I hope your weather isn't too hot. And that you have fun spinning more. hugs-Erika

    1. Google was messing with my blog list for awhile too but mine seems to be working better. I would be very unhappy with purchased yarn that is not "perfect" no excuse for that. if they are online I would give a review. my yarn does have character haha. Our weather is almost perfect for October-we are warming up a bit more each day now-hugs
